Beautiful DIY Frida Kahlo Costume - Crafty Chica

Even 64 years after Frida Kahlo's death, the Mexican artist continues to be an icon of unconventional beauty and creativity. If you're looking to honor the world-renowned Mexican painter with your Halloween costume this year, here are 18 ways to do it without missing a detail of Frida's traditional Tehuana style. How do you explain to a 5 year old Vincent Van Gogh cutting his ear off? Especially since that’s the biggest identifying factor of this costume, seems inappropriate for a kid’s costume. Over 200 objects have arrived from the Casa Azul, Kahlo’s former residence and the home where she was born, raised, and eventually died, which is now a museum dedicated to her life and work. The belongings retell Kahlo’s well-known life story, but with new insights: There’s an album of photographs of churches taken by her Hungarian-German father, Guillermo, and the medical braces and bodices embellished with symbols that she wore following the horrific accident that would haunt her for the rest of her life. Kahlo’s own telling of her physical suffering after the accident and her subsequent miscarriages is well-documented in the diaries she left behind, as well as a biography, but these bodices illustrate the ways that she found solace and healing through art, in a very direct way. Dia De Los Muertos Sweatshirt, Day of the Dead Shirt, Sugar Skull Sweatshirt, Mexican Sweatshirt, Halloween Sweatshirt, Halloween Hoodie She is endlessly inspiring. I had such a fun time explaining her life to Ava. We even found this super cute about her life, Frida Kahlo (Little People, Big Dreams) .The most challenging part was trying to decide which of her iconic looks to emulate. I mixed a few of them together for one special look.

But Tehuana dress now has another meaning, the one Kahlo gave it - and there is a secret history of fashion here that leads directly to Hollywood. Kahlo held a fatal attraction for Hollywood long before Madonna bought her painting, My Birth, and judged new acquaintances on how they reacted to seeing Kahlo's mature head emerging from her mother (the pre-Columbian sculpture that the painting quotes can currently be seen in the Royal Academy's Aztecs exhibition). In the early 1940s Man Ray took a photograph of the film star Dolores del Rio, who appeared in a series of studio hits including Flying Down to Rio and whose lovers included Orson Welles. Welles was fascinated by her extensive collection of underwear; but in the photograph, Del Rio wears not lingerie, but a Tehuana costume. This is certainly inspired by Kahlo. Del Rio was a close friend of the artist; in 1939 the openly bisexual Kahlo presented her with her painting Two Nudes in the Forest. Even if they had not been acquainted, Del Rio could hardly have been unaware of Kahlo's penchant for Tehuana costume - after her highly successful exhibitions in New York and Paris at the end of the 1930s, Kahlo's style was featured in Vogue, with a photograph of her bejewelled hand on the cover; and fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli created a Kahlo-inspired dress.
